Russian Short Course Championships: Four records set and even more berths earned on closing day

The morning sessions featured eight heats. Daniil Pakhomov of St. Petersburg set a national junior record in the 200m butterfly event. In yesterday’s semifinal, he beat a two-year-long national junior record in the 100m individual medley. The final saw the swimmer break his own record that he had set in the morning. Two other national junior records were set by Arina Openysheva in the 200m freestyle and Roman Larin in the 200m backstroke. Arina achieved a junior record in the 400m freestyle event earlier on the third competition day of the national tournament. Another hero of the day, Svetlana Chimrova, broke a national record in the 100m butterfly. 18 swimmers in total met the qualifying time standard.

“Yes, I’m happy with my result although it could have been better but it’s still good. My personal best was 2:18.9; I fell just a tiny bit short of beating a national record. Of course, we will be preparing for the European championships. I hope that I will be able to show a better performance and be on the top of my game. Although, I haven’t been gearing up that hard for the nationals but I’m still happy with the time I have shown. I think that I did quite well during the race despite the fact that all my opponents were quite strong and capable,” Maria Astashkina said after winning gold in the 200m breaststroke.

“My coach told me: ‘You are ready for 56.8. Go and nail it!’ So I went and nailed it. I was ready for it both mentally and physically. I haven’t being preparing for the 200m event but we’ve been gearing up for the 100 metres. I will be training before the Salnikov Cup, after that I will go to a training camp in Tenerife. We haven’t discussed what we are going to do after that but my coach said to me that we will not go to the Europeans. The main thing is that I make progress and improve my results,” commented Svetlana Chimrova who placed first in the 100m butterfly race.

“I’m happy with my performance: everything turned out just the way I had expected. Now we will start preparing for the European championships and fight for medals. All in all, I’m pleased with all my three races as I’ve shown quite good results and made very few mistakes. I’ve trained a lot. But other swimmers also did their best: it's just some of them were a little bit luckier than the rest. The competition is really quite tough and every year it is getting even tougher,” said Oleg Kostin who grabbed gold in the 50m breaststroke.
