July 24 - August 9, 2015
Both teams have already managed to gain gold Olympic medals in the 21st century, and now, it seems, they both wish to seize the World Championships title. Moreover, in the absence of representatives from Spain, a space in the top four is vacant.
However, contrary to expectations of professionals and neutral observers of the aquatics clash, a fight in the first half was not successful. The Dutch scored two goals against their opponents in the first period, and a further three in the second. However, the Orange team could not defend against everything, and they conceded before the break. The result at half time was 1-5. A quadruple was scored by Maud Megens.
But after the break, the attack by the Dutch was cut short. The Italians scored an unreciprocated goal in the third quarter, and after finding strength, created a sporting feat and equalised 5-5. This was the score at the end of the match.
In the after-match penalty throws, the Dutch proved to be more accurate at 5-4. And they will challenge the United States in the World Championships title on August 7. The Italians will now meet Australia in the match for the third place.
